III Workshop HydroVolcanic 2017
Study and management of water resources on volcanic islands. Most volcanic islands face problems from population growth, agricultural development and expansion of the tourist industry. This can have significant impacts on water resources, with worsening conditions of scarcity and pollution over time. The complex volcanic hydrogeological systems, characterized by perched and basal aquifers, are also highly vulnerable to recharge variations and marine salt water intrusion. As a result, managing water resources on small islands can be problematic, with scarcity of resources, isolation of sources, and increasing consumption being particular issues. This situation requires an integrated and sustainable approach to management, taking account of the interaction with the marine environment.
In this event we will: communicate and discuss significant aspects of production, availability, quality, use and management of water resources in island environments of volcanic origin; and we will consider how integrating socio-economic, environmental, institutional and regulatory issues related to water resources needs to be taken into account.Price: 50 - 100 €
Organised by University of Azores, Portuguese Chapter of IAH.
