A collection of seven articles in Hydrogeology Journal (March 2021) explores groundwater recharge and discharge processes in arid and semi-arid areas of China. The groundwater resources have undergone observable changes in water quality and quantity as a result of human activities and climate change. These articles provide insight into surface water and groundwater interaction, evapotranspiration, groundwater recharge, the effects of non-isothermal flow on groundwater recharge and eco-environmental problems related to groundwater, and they will interest hydrogeologists in other arid and semi-arid regions worldwide.
