A study mapping groundwater and aquifers in Niger, the first of its kind in the country using innovative remote sensing technology, has shown dramatic results. Niger is seen to be the most groundwater-rich country in the Sahel. Researchers suggest that the mapped resources can be of great value to authorities charged with planning sustainable agricultural, urban, and rural residential development in Niger, as well as areas that should be targeted for conservation to ensure sustainable groundwater recharge.
