The IAH Regional Groundwater Flow Commission (RGFC-IAH) are recruiting new members to join their commission. See below a letter from the RGFC-IAH Board.
Dear Members of the IAH,
Students and Professionals from all over the world,
We address you as representatives and board members of the IAH Regional Groundwater Flow Commission (RGFC). Let us start with a little introduction about ourselves. The Commission was founded in 2011. Our primary mission is to zoom out from single aquifers and aquitards and understand the operation of regional groundwater flow across aquifer-aquitard systems.
We hope this approach can motivate new research, including mathematical analysis of flow system properties and GIS-based methods to study the geological agency of regional groundwater flow. The significance of the regional groundwater flow system lies in its ubiquity and generality in the upper part of the core in terrestrial regions of the Earth. Thus, its involvement can help understand the groundwater’s role in all geological, biological and environmental processes from the ground surface down to ~10 km.
Revealing the pathways of water particles in the underground can also help solve practical problems. The consideration of regional groundwater flow in aquifer systems allows groundwater-related questions to be addressed on a larger scale than for single aquifers. These are as follows:
- The role of the regional flow in all practical aspects of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals
- Advances the hydraulic characterisation of groundwater flow
- Develop new concepts, approaches and methods in hydrogeology
- Support the use of the correct terms and concepts related to regional groundwater flow
- Help to handle groundwater issues in the water and energy transition
- Contribute to sustainable water use
- Key concept to explain groundwater related processes to the society
If you are interested in any of these topics, you can join the Commission to be an active member of this worldwide scientific community.
If you are a student who wants to learn about groundwater or a professional dealing with practical problems, we welcome you to the group.
