Dr Wendy Timms
Dr Wendy Timms has 30 years of experience as an environmental engineer and hydrogeologist, in consulting engineering, government, research and education. She has degrees in Geology, Hydrology and Chemistry from the University of Newcastle (1994), Hydrogeology, from the Australian National University (1995) and a Doctorate in Environmental Engineering from the University of New South Wales (2001). She is a Chartered Civil Engineer and Environmental Engineer and serves on expert panels providing independent advice on environment aspects of resource and energy projects.
Wendy has worked on projects across Australia, and in Canada and New Zealand. Her experience also includes South Africa, Namibia, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Korea, Singapore, Italy, Morocco, Poland, France, Austria, Germany, UK, USA and Chile, including a year in a UNHCR refugee camp.
Wendy was appointed as a Professor in the Deakin School of Engineering in 2018 and is also part of the Centre for Sustainable Bioproducts. From 2012 to 2018 Wendy was the Director of Postgraduate Coursework and Senior Lecturer at UNSW School of Mining Engineering and affiliated with the UNSW Connected Waters Initiative. Wendy was a founding member of the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training, focused on aquitard research from 2009-2015. Before this she was a consulting Senior Project Engineer (2003-2011) and a hydrogeologist for the NSW government (1996-1997), a PhD scholar (1998-2001) and a mine water researcher in Saskatchewan Canada (2002-2003).
Wendy was IAH Regional Vice President for Australasia and the Pacific from 2012 to 2020. Prior to this she was part of the IAH Australia National Chapter and Branch leadership and has continued her support since then. A notable objective for Wendy has been support for hydrogeologists who may be isolated by barriers such as distance, training, funding, gender and the range of professional opportunities. Wendy is also a member of Engineers Australia and have been a member of Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the International Mine Water Association.
Wendy Timms is a very worthy recipient of the 2025 IAH Presidents’ Award.
