Dr Wilhelm Struckmeier
Dr Wilhelm Struckmeier, (affectionately known as ‘Willi’ to all IAH Members) gained his doctorate at the Technical University, Aachen, and joined BGR in 1979, where his roles included Head of Central Information Services, Head of International Groundwater Cooperation, Director and Visiting Professor of Hydrogeology at the Technical Universities of Darmstadt and of Goettingen. He retired from full time employment in 2013.
Willi is the author of more than 100 publications. He is known as the ‘global champion’ of hydrogeological map-making and established WHYMAP (World-wide Hydrogeological Mapping and Assessment Programme) of Unesco, IAH, CGMW, BGR and IGRAC which produced the Hydrogeological Map of the World. He has also published continental hydrogeological maps of Europe, Africa, Asia, and numerous national and regional maps.
Willi has been a member and long-standing servant of the IAH since 1977. He was Chairman of the Commission on Hydrogeological Maps from 1983 to 2008. From 1994 to 2006 he served as Treasurer in the IAH Executive, after which he became Secretary General. He was elected as President for the period 2008 to 2012 and then served as Past-President until 2016. For his long-term contribution to the work of the Association, Dr Wilhelm Struckmeier fully deserves the award of Honorary Membership.
