Presidents’ Award, 2024

Jane Dottridge

Jane Dottridge is a Chartered Geologist and is a hydrogeologist with nearly 50 years’ experience, as an academic, a consultant and as an internationally elected representative of the profession.

She is a graduate in Natural Sciences (Geology) from Cambridge University, with a MSc in Hydrogeology (University of Birmingham). A member of IAH since 1990, Jane chaired the British National Chapter from 2006-2011. She has been active as a mentor for IAH’s mentoring scheme and was on the judging panel for the Applied Hydrogeology Award from 2016-19. An active member of the Geological Society in the UK, she was a trustee of its council from 2013-2016 and chaired both its hydrogeology and contaminated land specialist groups. She was the Chief Scientific Editor of the Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology and a member of the publications committee. She was awarded the Society’s Whitaker medal in 2017.

Most of Jane’s career has been as a consultant hydrogeologist, initially in water resources projects, before focussing on contaminant hydrogeology. She is the author or co-author of over 50 papers and conference presentations. During the 1990s, she was a senior lecturer in Hydrogeology at University College London, teaching MSc and undergraduate students while undertaking research in groundwater contamination and modelling. Her international experience includes projects in Algeria, Bangladesh, India, Jordan, Morocco, Poland, Romania, Spain, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Yemen.

As IAH Secretary General, Jane has led the review of strategy, strengthening IAH’s influence on global policy and outreach activities, through collaboration, alliances and communication with UN agencies, international organisations and NGOs involved in water science and policy. She has a special interest in IAH’’s equity, diversity and inclusion strategy and the Early Careers Network, seeking to nurture and grow the organisation and the global community of hydrogeologists.

Jane Dottridge is a very worthy recipient of the 2024 IAH Presidents’ Award.
