Presidents’ Award, 2021

Dr Judit Mádl-Szőnyi

Judit Mádl-Szőnyi is a hydrogeologist with more than 30 years’ experience in academia and wider research. Judit was awarded her MSc in geology (1986) and PhD in hydrogeology (1997) from Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Budapest, Hungary.

Judit began her research career at the Institute of Water Resources Research. This was followed by Lectureships and Associate Professorships at ELTE, where she founded the scientific group on regional groundwater flow, which benefits from strong international interest. She is the Chair Holder of József and Erzsébet Hydrogeology Chair.

Her research is focusing on the understanding of regional groundwater flow, dealing with its geological and environmental consequences. Over the last decade, she has adapted groundwater flow theory to carbonate systems. Judit has authored and co-authored more than 70 scientific papers, seven books, 33 book chapters, and several conference papers. She has managed more than fifteen national and international research and development projects.

Judit has served for many years on the Committee of the Hungarian National Chapter of IAH, where she initiated the translation of the IAH’s Strategic Overview Series to Hungarian. She is a member of the IAH Karst Commission and in 2011 she helped found and was appointed Chair of IAH’s Regional Groundwater Flow Commission. The Commission’s activities helped highlight the significance of the flow systems in all types of hydrogeological solutions worldwide. From 2010 to 2014 Judit was an Associate Editor of IAH’s Hydrogeology Journal. She is an Academic Editor at Geofluids, a member of the Editorial Board of Discover Water and an Associate Editor for the Italian Journal of Groundwater.

Judit has helped organise over 25 scientific sessions at international conferences, including IAH congresses, EGU General Assemblies and Eurokarst conferences. She has been an invited speaker on international symposia and a guest lecturer or expert in Mexico, China, Slovenia, Germany, Tunisia, and Sweden.

Judit has received numerous awards, including for excellence in lecturing from the Eötvös Loránd University and Vitális Sándor Awards from the Hungarian Hydrological Society. Dr Judit Mádl-Szőnyi is a very worthy recipient of the 2021 Presidents’ Award.
