Professor Custodio is honoured as a crucial figure in modern hydrogeology. He was highly committed to the IAH since he first joined in 1974. In the periods 1980–1984, 1996–2000, and 2004–2009, he served as a member of the IAH board of directors, eventually becoming president in 2000–2004. He made significant contributions to the scientific and organizational development of the association. His work continues to inspire and guide hydrogeologists around the world.
