Obituary – Ghislain de Marsily

It is with sadness that we wish to inform our members of the passing of Professor Ghislain de Marsily. Since the 1960’s Ghislain was a prominent contributor to the field of hydrogeology, who was an IAH Presidents’ Award recipient, IAH Honorary Member and IAH President of the French chapter.

Ghislain was a legendary figure at Paris VI, where he completed his PhD in 1978, became Professor of Geology in 1985, and was then Director of the Applied Geology Laboratory until 2004.

Throughout his career, Ghislain was an inspiring teacher and a large number of students graduated under his guidance. His textbooks have become important milestones in the development of hydrogeological sciences and in particular his textbook on quantitative hydrogeology has become a standard for students.
