Hydrogeology Bundle: Part 3 Seawater Intrusion Modeling – How to Set up, Run and Visualize with SEAWAT Numerical Model
Due to rapid urban development, climate change, intense agriculture and other factors shallow unconfined aquifers in a lot of coastal regions have become highly vulnerable to contamination from sea water intrusions.
The SEAWAT program is designed to simulate variable-density ground-water flow and solute transport in three dimensions. The underlying concept of SEAWAT is to combine an existing flow code (MODFLOW) with an existing solute-transport code (MT3DMS) to form a single program that solves the coupled flow and solute-transport equations.
One benefit of the SEAWAT approach is that improved and updated versions of the flow and transport codes can be incorporated into the SEAWAT program to take advantage of recent improvements. Another benefit is that users familiar with the constant-density versions of the flow and transport codes can easily apply the SEAWAT program to variable-density ground-water problems.
Course topics:
Set up 3D conceptual model in MODFLOW with 11 layers
Assign both MODFLOW and SEAWAT boundaries (for seawater intrusion model)
Properly set up different parameters in SEAWAT
Run the transient SEAWAT seawater intrusion model
Visualize results in 3D
Learn which groundwater sampling method works the best in coastal zones influenced by seawater intrusion?
Learn what are typical groundwater discharge rates in coastal zones around The World - compare it with your model to validate it.
Analyzing local and regional SEAWAT model for water resources management - case study from USGS (United States Geological Survey)
Who should attend?
This course is ideally suited for hydrogeologists, environmental engineers and climate change experts as an additional skill to make informed decisions in coastal zones.
Prerequisite:
B.Sc in hydrogeology, geology, environmental engineering, civil engineering.
Time Commitment:
Average 2 - 3 hours per week to finish course. We encourage you to spend time with the course each week. Your focused attention will pay off in the end!
If anything seems unclear or you just have a question, then please let me know - I will get back to you as soon as possible, usually less then 24 hours. After each lecture you have place to ask questions. Again, thank you for joining me on this course.Price: 159 USD
