SYMPLE – School of Hydrogeological Modelling 2ed.
Groundwater Modelling, Calibration, Uncertainty Analysis. The School lasts 1 year and is articulated into 3 sections:
1. Before Modelling (recorded)
The first part of the School is a kind of “modeller’s toolbox” that can provide some of the basics needed before engaging in numerical modelling. The importance of getting back to the pillars of geology, hydrogeology and maths is surely clear, but it will be even clearer during the practical modelling exercises. Attendance of the courses is up to the individual, according to his/her own interests and personal background.
2. Numerical Modelling (Live)
The central section of the School is dedicated to hydrogeological modeling, starting from the basic concepts up to the most advanced techniques of uncertainty analysis. The lessons are mainly held live and include tips for the extraction of data information with the maximum efficiency, as well as a review of ICT basics, fundamental components of any modelling process.
The MODFLOW GUIs used in the exercises are Groundwater Vistas and ModelMuse, free interface from the USGS, in association with PEST(++). The Groundwater Vistas course is held by Daniel Feinstein who provides important insights about MODFLOW, as well as many other related codes, explaining in detail the nuances and settings of several packages. The theory behind calibration and uncertainty analysis is introduced by John Doherty, the author of PEST. The software used in the exercises cover the most recent and innovative approaches developed in the PEST and PEST ++ suites. A wide set of applications helps the understanding of sometimes complex concepts, making use of both GUIs and command line input. A real-world case is analysed to demonstrate data assimilation, uncertainty analysis and its application to decision-support modelling.
3. Modelling with Python (recorded)
This advanced section is dedicated to the state-of-the-art Python scripting with FloPy and PyEMU explained by a team of experts among which the developers of the software Jeremy White (INTERA) and Mike Fienen (USGS). Codes involved are MODFLOW 6, MODPATH, PEST and PEST++ suites.

20-24 Mar 2023 – Vetralla (VT) - Italy
The PEST Course – Applications & Theory
Numerical Model Calibration and Uncertainty Analysis. The course covers the most advanced calibration and uncertainty analysis techniques
through the PEST and PEST++ suites. It targets those who develop, calibrate, deploy and rely on models to support environmental decision-making, as well as water resources managers, stakeholders and anyone who wishes to better understand what groundwater modelling can, and cannot, offer to the decision-making process. Previous model building experience is not required, but recommended.
The course is organized into a pre-course online session for orientation, 5 days on-site in Vetralla (central Italy) and a post-course on-line session aimed at discussing the doubts maturared after a while.
Course details available at this link: https://hydrosymple.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/PEST_course_Italy_2023_v1.pdf.Price: 900-400 euro
Organised by SYMPLE.

Surface Water – Groundwater Interaction: From Watershed Processes to Hyporheic Exchange
The course consists of lectures and problem-solving exercises using computer software. At the end of each lecture day, students will have the opportunity to make short presentations (15 minutes) and receive suggestions from instructors and classmates. Participants are responsible for their own travel, food and lodging expenses. Please note that we cannot assist you with travel and accommodation. The course is in English and it is necessary to attend with a laptop computer. If you are interested in registering for the course, please do so via an online registration form at the website shown below.
