Regional groundwater flow systems. The lecture starts at 4 pm and lasts one hour.
The concept of topography-driven groundwater flow systems is useful for understanding the effect of topographic settings on the spatial pattern of groundwater flow at various scales in homogeneous materials. However, systematic variability in permeability can override the effects of topography, resulting in a completely different flow system compared to the simple topography-driven flow. A few examples from Canada will be used to demonstrate the importance of considering geological heterogeneity in a realistic conceptualization of groundwater flow systems.
