Data from nearly 43,000 monitoring points across 47 countries show that groundwater bodies are out of balance due to pumping and climate change.
A few months before the next United Nations water conference, which is due to be held in the United Arab Emirates in December, a study by the International Groundwater Resources Assessment Centre (IGRAC) paints a worrying picture of “twenty years of imbalance” in the bodies of water underground. A situation that has “consequences at all levels”, environmental, social and economic, says Elisabeth Lictevout, director of this United Nations-affiliated body.
