In 2020, an international team of karst experts started working on a detailed Mediterranean Karst Aquifer Map and Database (MEKDAM). After completion of the printed map in 2022, the accompanying publication has now been released in Hydrogeology Journal https://doi.org/10.1007/s10040-024-02810-1. The map shows the distribution of carbonate rocks and karst water resources in the Mediterranean region and related aspects such as groundwater recharge and the extent of changes in groundwater storage. It also includes a compilation of selected terrestrial and submarine karst springs, caves and karst groundwater-dependent ecosystems. The map is available for download in digital form. The work was carried out as part of the project “Karst Aquifer Resources Availability and Quality in the Mediterranean Area (KARMA)”, led by Prof. Nico Goldscheider of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany).
