Stop the Rot Webinar – Ensuring that water supply services perform: learning from implementation and research
Rural Water Supply Network will host its late webinar series of 2024 between 12 November and 11 December. This is the fourth event of the series, sponsored by the Stop the Rot project.
This webinar focuses on the quality of water supplies from site identification right through to assessing why services perform poorly. It draws on practical experiences from The Water Project, the British Geological Survey (BGS) and BaseFlow. The presentations, followed by a discussion will examine the delivery of comprehensive water services in Kenya, Uganda, and Sierra Leone, and what has driven the functionality and performance of rural handpumps/boreholes in Ethiopia, Malawi and Uganda. Finally, the webinar will highlight on-going work to develop a practical guide to diagnosing key causes of poor performance of rural water supplies.
LANGUAGE: This session will be in English, with simultaneous translation to French
REGISTRATION: Please register by 2 December 2024. You will then receive an email with the link for the webinar.

Organised by Stop the Rot.

Sustainable Landscape and Green Infrastructure (SLGI) – 2nd Edition
Landscape and Natural Resources. In an era marked by environmental challenges and increased awareness, preserving the planet's health is crucial. The second edition of the Sustainable Landscape and Green Infrastructure (SLGI) conference navigates the challenges of safeguarding both tangible and intangible elements that define the Earth's ecological identity. Striking a balance between sustainable landscape practices and ensuring the protection of natural resources is essential. Innovative approaches, including mindful landscaping and sustainable living practices, are vital for responsible engagement. Individuals must adopt strategies to moderate their environmental impact, encouraging shared responsibility and ensuring that daily choices directly contribute to landscape preservation.

SEG Online Workshop: Improving Understanding and Treatment of Uncertainty in Groundwater Science and Management
Scheduled for February 11, 18, and 25, 2025. The workshop, hosted by SEG (Society of Exploration Geophysicists), will feature three 5-hour sessions, with a focus on modeling, parameterization, and practical applications of uncertainty in hydrogeology and hydrogeophysics.
This workshop will raise global awareness of understanding, quantifying, managing, and communicating uncertainty in groundwater studies and identify research imperatives and best practices that industry practitioners and researchers can adopt.
Hydrogeologists and hydrogeophysicists aim at characterizing the subsurface regarding its hydrogeological and geophysical properties and geometries. We see potential for inter-disciplinary learning by recognizing the relationship between hydrogeological and hydrogeophysical properties, conceptual approaches, analytical solutions, algorithms, and assumptions involved in modelling the subsurface in both disciplines.
Groundwater consulting practice has to cater to the clients’ need for certainty and too often resorts to deterministic solutions. Uncertainties arising from the estimation of either hydrogeologic or hydrogeophysical properties are often not fully understood and rarely systematically accounted for. Yet, a realistic and transparent estimate of uncertainty is crucial to build trust in model outcomes and inform the client’s groundwater-based planning. Therefore, improving our understanding of this uncertainty is a pressing issue attracting increased interest by all stakeholders. With this workshop, we aim to identify practical approaches for a more complete treatment of uncertainty in groundwater science and management.Price: US$200 Professional Registration Fee (Member and Non-member), US$20 Student Registration Fee (Member and Non-member)
Organised by Society of Exploration Geophysicists.
